OpSource Bundles Firewall VPN and Load Balancing with Cloud Servers

OpSource, Inc., announced that it has begun bundling hardware-based security and networking with its Cloud Servers in order to make secure cloud computing accessible and affordable to businesses of all sizes. While cloud computing can deliver cost savings of 70%, security concerns have made many organizations reluctant to migrate mission-critical applications to the cloud. Now with OpSource, businesses migrating away from dedicated hosting environments or extending IT data centers can reduce cost without compromising data security.

“Organizations that consider moving mission-critical applications into the cloud typically cite security as one of their number one concerns, and it continues to be a barrier to entry,” said Philbert Shih, senior analyst, hosting for Tier1 Research. “A compelling security story paves the way for enterprises and SMBs to migrate applications to the cloud and provides significant value-add for potential customers.”

As part of this move, OpSource said that its Cloud Servers, a virtual machine on a physical server, will come with a Cloud Network, a dedicated virtual local area network (VLAN) that can be customized with a variety of security controls. OpSource uses Cisco® Data Center Business Advantage solutions, including Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Switches for the core, and Cisco MDS 9000 Series Multilayer Directors for storage access. The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Switches contain Cisco ACE Application Control Engine Modules and Cisco Firewall Services Modules to provide multiple layers of defense against security threats such as hacking, worms, zombies and denial of service attacks.

OpSource’s Cloud Networking features can be configured via a web user interface or a RESTful API and include:

Dedicated VLANs to isolate and segment cloud server and network traffic
Dedicated firewalls to filter traffic with Access Control Lists on network, network segment or server
Network address translation (NAT)
Virtual private networking (VPN) and data encryption for both client-to-site and site-to-site secure networking
Load balancing and multicast to support clustered web, application and database servers
OpSource also announced that these capabilities would be available in three new tiered service plans in addition to its Pay-As-You-Go option, to make it easier for companies to get started with the cloud. OpSource’s service plans include:

Pay-As-You-Go: Flexible pricing from $0.04 per CPU hour
Express Bundle ($79 per month): 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB Storage
Professional Bundle ($149 per month): 2 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB Storage
Growth Bundle ($549 per month): 8 CPU, 16 GB RAM, 640 GB Storage
With the constant threat of security breaches, having a clear and robust security implementation is a necessity for broad enterprise adoption. OpSource is guided by a “defense-in-depth” security model, in which a series of security layers are implemented so that no single network element is relied upon to provide security.

“Our objective in developing these new cloud service bundles was to make it easy for all businesses to implement network security in the same way they do in their own data centers,” said Treb Ryan, CEO of OpSource. “With this move, we are able to provide much more value than our competitors by including powerful, Cisco-based security capabilities as part of the service and for no additional charge. We’re providing these features at a price point that makes it accessible for everyone.”

Software-as-a-Service ISVs, cloud platform providers, carriers and enterprises rely on OpSource’s expertise, experience and agility to operate high-availability, business-critical hosting environments. OpSource Cloud is the first cloud computing solution to bring together the flexibility, availability and community of the public cloud with the security, performance and control the enterprise demands.
