EvoSwitch, the CO2-neutral data center in Amsterdam, has announced a three-year extension to its contract with Codemasters, which will see the video game developer and publisher continue to use EvoSwitch data center and services until 2014.

As part of the contract, EvoSwitch will continue to provide high-performance, high-availability internet connectivity and data center housing for Codemasters.

Codemasters is one of the world’s best-known games publishers, and over the past 5 years has published MMO games with millions of customers around the world. It was not unusual for tens of thousands of players to be online simultaneously and any interruption to the game, or loss of data could have been catastrophic.

By choosing to host their MMO games with EvoSwitch, Codemasters benefitted from high-availability and fast connectivity, as well as great customer support. EvoSwitch support staff effectively act as an extension of Codemasters’ in-house IT team when problems do occur with servers, connectivity or remote data handling.

Commenting on the deal, Stephen Brown, IT Operations manager at Codemasters, said, “We initially chose EvoSwitch after a trial period during which we were impressed with their ability to deliver quality services at a lower cost to the environment. However, throughout our time working with them we have discovered higher levels of customer service than we ever anticipated. We really feel that they are a true partner in our business.”

Moving forward, Codemasters have changed their Online strategy and have decided to move away from MMOs and focus upon developing and hosting their own range of Browser-based online games, as well as providing online functionality for the company’s console and PC games, including Dirt3, F1 2011 and many other future releases. The company will also be moving their online web presence including their corporate website and forums into Evoswitch shortly for greater security as well as the other benefits of the Evoswitch facility.

Mark Fowlis, Director, IT Technical, at Codemasters said about the renewal, “Evoswitch have been an excellent partner for us over the past years. We have been impressed with their service and approach, as well as their flexibility working with us. Evoswitch have also been a market leader in Green credentials which other companies have only recently started to offer. Our confidence in Evoswitch for our future needs meant that renewing our partnership with them was an easy decision.”

Eric Boonstra, Managing Director of EvoSwitch, added: “For an Internet gaming company, downtime will have a huge impact on the bottom line, so it’s vital for Codemasters to have reliable infrastructure. We’re delighted that we will be able to continue to partner with Codemasters as they embark on the next generation of online services for gamers around the world.”

EvoSwitch also offers Codemasters flexible expansion options together with a carbon neutral power supply and an energy efficient hosting environment. These green credentials, combined with EvoSwitch’s central location in Europe and fast access to international airports, make the site an ideal choice for a fast-growing, global business.

Codemasters currently runs around 400 servers (a mixture of blade servers and rack-mounted servers), two Storage Area Networks (SAN) and other storage including RAMSAN, plus a resilient network infrastructure. The company is now rolling out additional web-based and mobile connectivity services, which will require additional connectivity and ongoing support.
