DreamHost & StopBadware Announce Partnerhip to Make the Web Safer

. June 2, 2012

DreamHost, a global full-service web hosting company, has today announced a deep and meaningful partnership with nonprofit anti-malware organization StopBadware (www.stopbadware.org). DreamHost will contribute both funds and forensic intelligence to further StopBadware’s tireless efforts to identify and help cleanse the Internet of websites distributing malware.

DreamHost will also participate in, and supply color commentary to, StopBadware’s Partners Forum, an ongoing conversation among industry leaders and security experts. Members of the Partners Forum also meet on a monthly basis with the shared goal of making the Internet safer through a comprehensive combination of information sharing, group collaboration, and raw techie brainpower.

Asked for comment about the arrangement, DreamHost customer Johnathan Doether offered, “I’m not the young man I used to be. I sometimes need some help in the bedroom department if you know what I mean.” Pausing to deliver a creepy wink half-shrouded in unkempt gray eyebrow hair, Doether continued, “Imagine my surprise when I opened my own website one day only to discover that everything had been replaced by links to a Canadian pharmacy specializing in exactly what I was looking for. Classic glass half-full situation. All this happened because, well… I’m not exactly good at writing web apps. Hackers found a flaw in my code and just went to town. The good news is that StopBadware’s badware removal advice prevented thousands of people from spending money just like I did on pills that didn’t friggin’ work anyway.”

DreamHost’s sponsorship of StopBadware continues the company’s long-standing commitment to website security, building on years of behind-the-scenes battles with Internet fraudsters, hackers, and digital ne’er-do-wells.

“As a web host with over 1.2 million customer domain names living on our network, we need to be not only vigilant about the activities of websites that live within our infrastructure, but also proactive in sharing information about attacks, exploits, and effective strategies for dealing with website malware,” said DreamHost’s Lead Security Architect, Robert Rowley. “The StopBadware Partners Forum allows us to do that on a much grander scale. We’re looking forward to working with their community to help root out digital evil among our servers and the Internet at large.”

“StopBadware has always touted the indisputable importance of web hosting providers in preventing and addressing malware infection and educating customers,” said StopBadware Raconteur Caitlin Condon. “When we implemented a pilot URL reporting project last summer, DreamHost was consistently one of the most responsive and proactive hosting providers we encountered. Their expertise and commitment to security makes them a valuable addition to our merry band of partners in anti-crime.”
