Timico Selects BT iNet for Cloud Services

Timico, the independent internet and managed service provider, has selected BT iNet as its strategic partner to develop a new £5 million data centre.

The tier three facility at Timico’s Newark headquarters will provide two 2,000 square foot data halls, each supporting 72 racks for colocation of customers’ equipment.

In addition to this, Cisco’s Unified Computing System and EMC’s VNX platforms will provide virtual computing and storage capability to address growing demand from Timico’s business customers. This will be underpinned by a new resilient core routing infrastructure utilising the Juniper MX80 IP Switching platform.

The data centre, set to open in January 2012, has been designed to meet the latest standards in power balancing, reliability and efficiency. Free air cooling and Cold Aisle containment are incorporated to minimise power consumption; multiple carrier-independent 10GB fibre links will provide the data centre with the highest performance network; and a dedicated 1.3MVA power substation with dual UPS and back-up generators ensure reliability.

As well as providing cloud services to its business customers, the new site will also enable Timico to consolidate and virtualise internal systems inherited from its recent acquisitions Newnet, Handheld PCs and Powernet.

Trefor Davies, CTO at Timico, said: “Mobilisation and virtualisation are changing the face of business IT and communications. The virtual computing and storage platform we are investing in means we can add leading-edge hosted applications to our business offering. These will be seamlessly integrated with our private wide area network capability, which we’re already famous for. The strength and experience of BT iNet as a strategic partner means we can have total confidence in the quality of the underlying technology.”

Neil Pemberton, managing director at BT iNet said: “Increasingly we are seeing demand for cloud solutions from our customers as the disruptive forces of mobilisation and virtualisation take hold. A data centre such as this one provides the level of innovation required to meet this growing demand.”

In addition to BT iNet, BT Wholesale also played a key role in supporting Timico throughout its decision making process.
