Heritage April Domain Names & IP auction

Tablets.com, the exact category name representing an industry that is worth nearly $100 billion a year, anchors Heritage Auctions’ April 9 Domain Names & Intellectual Property Auction, the follow-up to Heritage’s inaugural Domain & IP auction late last year, which realized more than $1.6 million in total.

“Forecasts show that nearly 300 million tablets will ship this year,” said Meystedt. “Tablets.com represents a tremendous opportunity for a smart, forward-thinking buyer. It’s an opportunity for an established company to solidify its authority in the industry, while owning an asset that will potentially help them reach new customers and rank higher in SEO. It also offers the chance for a newcomer to this category to gain instant credibility and SEO while reaching a whole new customer base.”

In point of fact, Whisky.com sold earlier in 2014 for $3.1 million, clearly illustrating that category leading domain names still carry tremendous value and commercial appeal.

Also on offer is the domain Future.com, an unforgettable premium one-word domain name, originally registered in 2000 and not publicly available in more than 14 years.

“There are very few one-word .com domains of this caliber on the Internet,” said Meystedt. “It’s unforgettable, it’s just a single word and it inspires grand, forward-thinking — exactly what a major brand or product wants to be associated with.”

Two letter domain names among the most valuable of all Internet real estate, with only 676 possible combinations, with the majority of these owned by large corporations. With that in mind, Heritage Auctions is offering the domain LK.com, being made available for the very first time by the owner. All two-letter .com domain names have been registered for many years. LK.com is no exception; it has been registered since 1997.

“Occasionally, a two-letter .com will surface on the aftermarket with truly premium letters and LK.com is one of those names,” said Meystedt. “LK.com is a great investment opportunity but also represents an opportunity to brand a company with a valuable domain asset, joining major corporations internationally.”

Many two -letter .com purchases have reached significant amounts. Reported sales include:
FB.com to Facebook for $8.5 million, IG.com to the IG Group for $4.7 million and YP.com to Yellow Pages for $3.85 million.

Further highlights of the auction include, but are not limited to:

March.com
Spokane.com
Skinny.com
SouthAmerica.com
CorpusChristi.com
Sword.com
Cola.com

Nominet announce .uk domain name

Nominet has announced plans to offer registrations directly before the ‘dot’ in .uk.

From summer 2014, shorter, simpler ‘example.uk’ domain names will be available for the first time alongside ‘example.co.uk’, ‘example.org.uk’ and so on. This represents the biggest modification of the .uk namespace since it began.

Any unique ‘example.uk’ domain name (e.g. one that does not have an equivalent name already registered as a .co.uk or a .org.uk) will be available on a first-come, first served basis from launch.

Over ten million existing .uk customers will be offered the shorter equivalent of their current address, with five years to decide whether they want to use it in addition to, or instead of the domain they already have. In the small proportion of instances where there could be competition – e.g. where one person holds example.co.uk and another holds example.org.uk – the shorter domain will be offered to the .co.uk registrant.

The five-year free reservation period is designed to help businesses taking up the new domain do so at a time that coincides with when they next change signage or stationary, so they don’t incur unnecessary incremental costs.

All Nominet’s existing domains (.co.uk, .org.uk, .net.uk, .me.uk, .plc.uk, .ltd.uk and sch.uk) will continue to run as normal.

Heritage Domain Name & Intellectual Property Auction

The domain name MutualFunds.com, potentially valued at well more than $1 million, is being offered by New York Times best-selling author Marc Ostrofsky, as the centerpiece of Heritage Auctions’ inaugural Domain Name & Intellectual Property Signature® Auction, with bidding now open until the live auction event on Nov. 21.

The auction marks the first time that a major, mainstream auction house has entered the market for domain names.

“Millions of dollars of Domain Names are traded every single month that the public isn’t aware of,” said Aron Meystedt, the Founder and Director of the Domain Names & Intellectual Property category at Heritage. “Now, for the first time, the broader public is going to have the opportunity to experience the market firsthand. Digital assets offer a global opportunity unlike any other to the right buyer or business; they offer a different kind of asset and a different way to think about collecting overall.”

Important one and two word domain names have a long history of selling for well more than seven figures, including $11 million for Hotels.com, $9.9+ million for Fund.com, $7.5 million for diamond.com and $5.1 million for Toys.com. Now, with the Nov. 21 auction at Heritage, MutualFunds.com stands poised to join those names in the top tier, in front of a global audience.

“If you’re an investment business, a bank, or a single investor or collector looking for one of the prime domain names that will ever be made broadly available to the public,” said Ostrofsky, “MutualFunds.com is the preeminent domain you could possible want to own. It has staggering potential for the right owner.”

Domain names, as the foundation of an Internet presence for businesses, personalities and ideas, have become increasingly important in modern society for anyone looking to establish a brand and control relevant information. As such, URLs with relating to broad ideas — such as Animation.com, Bicycle.com, or DVDs.com, all in this auction — or those with just two letters to them — QR.com or NL.com, also both in the Nov. 21 event — will be highly sought after by both businesses and collectors.

“Domain names are purely digital, have virtually zero carrying costs and they offer the ability to generate passive revenue while you hold them,” said Meystedt. “This is digital Real Estate. It’s an investment that will never need a new foundation or a new roof but will remain evergreen in the eyes of buyers and sellers, especially if you are lucky enough right now to get your hands on a one or two word or letter dot-com, which are the gold standard when it comes to these investments.”

Other highlights in the auction include, but are not limited to: Numismatics.com, Alexandria.com, Suit.com, Tie.com, Sociology.com, LuxuryBags.com; EqualRights.com and CurrencyExchange.com.

1&1 REGISTRAR FOR NEW TOP-LEVEL-DOMAINS

1&1 Internet, Ltd., has signed the ICANN’s Registrar Accreditation Agreement. The organisation is responsible for the global Internet address allocation of new Top Level Domains. As a result, 1&1 will be able to offer more than 700 new endings as Internet addresses in the future.

1&1 internetFrom October, the new domains will offer companies and individuals alike new ways to be found more easily on the web. Besides regional suffixes like .london or .wales, terms like .web or .mail will be available for general use. Small businesses can indicate the nature of their website with words like .shop or .shopping. Similarly, descriptive names like .car or .restaurant will lead additional visitors to the Internet presence.

“The new Top Level Domains will play a decisive role for future success on the web” says Robert Hoffmann, CEO Hosting, 1&1 Internet. “A good domain must stand out and be easy for customers to remember. Search Engines like Google are also optimised to display the most relevant results prominently. Special domains will have a strong influence on the listing of results and so ultimately on the commercial success of the enterprise”, continues Hoffmann.

Customers who have not managed to obtain succinct domain names with the appropriate .co.uk or .com, now have a chance to catch up. “But also those who already have a good address should protect their name in all possible variations before a competitor makes the move“, Hoffmann recommends.

With the integrated forwarding function, all domains newly registered with 1&1 can simply be forwarded to already existing web pages, regardless of the provider hosting them at the moment.

Which new domain suffixes may suit your own enterprise can be checked today at http://www.1and1.co.uk/new-top-level-domains . The 1&1 domain portal suggests Internet addresses relevant for the particular business area or the individual field of interest. Furthermore, new Top Level Domains can be reserved directly and without cost. As soon as the chosen domain suffixes become available, 1&1 will inform customers automatically. In the pricing, customers benefit from the economies of scale of one of the world’s leading hosting providers.

1&1 ANNOUNCE NEW gTLD PRE-ORDER PORTAL

1&1 Internet Ltdhas launched a new portal offering pre-orders for the latest generation of Internet addresses or ‘new gTLDs’. The new wave of domains will see scores of attractive new endings to be launched such as .london, .restaurant, .rugby, .shop and .web. 1&1’s portal offers the chance to express interest in registering such domains, and provides a range of informative advice and news on the subject. The new domains will play an important role in determining future online identity and so will become increasingly important for businesses to consider. 1&1 urges UK firms to begin planning which new domains could make most impact upon their online audience.

Over the next 3 years, the creation of more than 1000 new gTLD domains will mean a revolution in the way we identify websites. As well as using a country specific domain, such as .co.uk, websites will also leverage addresses relevant by theme – such as subject area, geographical location, website type, business sector etc. The launch will mean a less crowded Internet, as there will be a far greater range of options for an Internet address. For business owners, the result will be great new potential for capturing traffic and developing their digital branding. For many new gTLDs, there will be significant interest from all around the world. Therefore, to ensure best chances of success, 1&1 recommends business owners and individuals should make a free pre-order of domains early.

1&1’s new pre-order portal, www.1and1.co.uk/ntld-check, is a useful way for website owners to browse the new domain endings and make a risk-free pre-order for their relevant domain name choice. With its portal, 1&1 offers the ability to express an interest in purchasing the domains early in the process. Whilst a pre-order does not guarantee that a domain will be purchased, it is a highly useful step in scoping options, and laying foundations within the imminent new landscape of web addresses. The website is also a valuable source of domain news, expert advice articles and practical tips for those planning their domain portfolio.

Robert Hoffmann, CEO Hosting, 1&1 Internet Ltd, comments, “A new era in Internet addresses promises great opportunities for every business online. However, research released in March shows that the majority of SMEs are still unaware of the launch of new gTLDs. 1&1’s new pre-order portal comprises an excellent resource for website owners to learn about their options, pre-order their new domains now, and benefit from 1&1’s global scale and competence with domain registration”.

An important topic for business owners to consider is their success on popular search engines such as Google. In recent months, search engines have begun to detail how their algorithms will be adapted so that new gTLDs will index as highly as regular domain endings. The largest have indicated that if a new domain is reflective of a website’s content, it will indeed become a key ingredient in their delivering of the most relevant search results for consumers. This development means that new gTLDs are already becoming attractive to brand and trademark owners online.

As Europe’s largest domain name registrar, 1&1 is well placed to deliver a high quality service to its domain registration customers. The company currently holds 12 million customer contracts worldwide and manages over 11 million domain names. For more information visit the website at www.1and1.co.uk .

Cyber Compare Study Finds Premium UK Domain Sales in Slump

A study conducted by Cyber Compare (www.cybercompare.net) found that the average auction price paid for a Premium .UK domain has been falling for the last three years in a row.

Cyber CompareAfter looking at the data of 3698 domain name sales that completed between 2009 and 2012, we found that the average sale price for a domain has fallen by 23% from £316 down to £246 in 2012. The decline has been gradual between 2009 and 2012, as shown below:

– 2009 Average Sale Price £316

– 2010 Average Sale Price £316 (0%)

– 2011 Average Sale Price £269 (-15%)

– 2012 Average Sale Price £246 (-23%)

We also evaluated 3 letter domain name sale prices over the last 4 years, as these have traditionally been considered a safe investment because all 3 letter combinations have been registered. The sale prices of 3 letter domain names over the last 4 years have dipped and since risen back:

– 2009 Average Sale Price; £444
– 2010 Average Sale Price; £354
– 2011 Average Sale Price; £375
– 2012 Average Sale Price; £436

Based on 211, 3 letter domain sales.

Anthony Shapley, Managing Director at Cyber Compare comments “We weren’t at all surprised by the outcome of this research; the online marketplace has massively changed over the last 4 years becoming much more diverse with people focusing more on Mobile Apps. We’ve seen Google take away some of the SEO benefits of Exact Match Domains in September 2013, which will have inevitably slowed the pace of sales and reduced the value of these domains.”

Anthony then continued on “On top of that Nominet, the governing body for UK Domains has been pushing proposals and shortly revised proposals to release a new shortened .UK tld, on top of the existing .co.uk which has created uncertainty in the market, potentially causing people to hold off making big investments in .co.uk domains, whilst fighting through the financial crisis of 2008 which continues on.”

Domain Finder Tool Announced

The first thing a new website developer has to do is to find a domain name. They must carefully decide a name that represents their business and is memorable for customers. Unfortunately, many of the best domain names are already taken by other websites. When it comes to searching for a domain, nothing aids the Web developer like a domain finder tool. Domain Hosting City now offers this tool for Web developers, courtesy of Act Now Domains.

What is a Domain Finder Tool?

You cannot purchase a domain name that is already in use. To check for available website names, you have to scour through all of the available names on the web. With a domain name finder all you need to do is enter your ideal domain name in the tool bar. Once you click enter, the application instantly begins to search through all of the domain names available. If your desired name is still open, it will instantly tell you and show the price.

Sometimes, the name you are looking for is not available. In that case Domain Hosting City’s search availability program will recommend similar domains that are still open. If these domain names work for you, you can select one of them instead of the name that is already taken.

Other Features

If you find domain names that you want, the search tool will also assist you in finding common misspellings of those names. When someone types an address into their tool bar, they will often make similar spelling mistakes and typos. This common mistake is well-known among hackers and Internet criminals. Nefarious hackers will create an alternate site using the common misspelling and trick your clients out of their money. To prevent this, you can buy up the common misspellings at the same time that you purchase your domain name. You can design the misspelled domain name to redirect to the correct web page. This ensures that you retain your clients and protects customers from underhanded website owners.

Getting the Best Domain Name

Domain Hosting City has developed a reputation for giving each customer the best website creation experience possible. With this in mind, they have adopted a domain finder tool on their website. Assisted by Act Now Domains, this domain checker helps users to spend less time finding a domain and more time working on their website.

About Domain Hosting City

Domain Hosting City provides users with all of the latest information on what is going on in the world of domain names and web hosting.
