Namecheap Announces Second Annual MoveYourDomainDay for January 22

Namecheap, a leading domain name registrar, announces its second annual Move Your Domain Day for January 22nd. In 2012, Namecheap launched the Move Your Domain Day initiative to remind its users about the dangers of a closed Internet as brought upon by the possible passing of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. While the threat of the SOPA act has passed, similar acts have been proposed that may continue to threaten the very liberties we have earned the right to enjoy.

“We want ‘MoveYourDomainDay’ to become an annual protest and a commemoration of sorts that will continue to shine a light on the issue of a free and open internet, an issue we at Namecheap strongly believe in,” Richard Kirkendall, CEO of Namecheap, said. “Last year showed us what could happen when the entire internet mobilizes for a cause and we want to continue that spirit that inspired so many to make a stand. We donated over $60,000 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation to continue fighting bills like SOPA. We invite and urge every registrar, hosting company, or online entity that shares these same beliefs to participate in their own way and every customer to vote with their choice in company they do business with. As long as it brings more attention and focus to this extremely important issue, everybody wins.”

In 2013, Namecheap continues to fight the fight against such legislation. On January 22nd, Namecheap will be running a transfer special for qualified domains to Namecheap. Domain transfers on this date will be $3.99. In addition, Namecheap will donate $0.50 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation for every domain transferred to Namecheap. If more than 10,000 domains are transferred within this 24 hour period, $1 per domain will be donated to EFF. If more than 20,000 domains are transferred on that day, $1.50 per domain will be donated to EFF.

“EFF is pleased to join Namecheap in celebrating digital rights within the greater the Internet community. The funds donated from the moveyourdomainday effort will ensure EFF can continue to fight for free expression for Internet users worldwide,” said Shari Steele, Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

DOT Registry Applies for Four New Generic Top Level Domains

DOT Registry, LLC has pledged their commitment to the business community in the United States by applying for four new community based gTLDs through the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). DOT Registry is applying for .INC, .LLC, .LLP and, .CORP which they plan to use specifically to represent registered US businesses.

Community based gTLDs are designed to service a defined group, with registration parameters developed to protect the integrity of the given community. DOT Registry will provide registered US Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, and Limited Liability Partnerships with gTLDs representative of their business entity registrations.

DOT Registry CEO Shaul Jolles states that, “ It is our goal to create increased integrity for business representation online by developing gTLDs that represent specific business entity classifications. Through our corporate gTLD strings we will work to decrease the possibility of identity misrepresentation in a cyber setting and assist small to medium size businesses in legitimizing their services online.”

DOT Registry worked closely with many Secretary of State’s offices to develop their registration policies, which call for transparency in reporting and annual verification. Additionally, securing support letters from these Secretary of State’s offices in order to affirm the necessity of restrictions surrounding the strings LLC, INC, LLP and CORP. DOT Registry was informed by the position of the National Association of Secretary of States Business Services Committee in regards to business identity theft in a cyber setting and has taken a position similar to that described in NASS’s White Paper in regards to the importance of accurately representing businesses online.

In a March 20, 2012 letter to ICANN the Secretary of State of Delaware, Jeffrey W. Bullock whom protects the integrity of Delaware’s legal entity registration system, which is home to nearly one million legal entities and 63% of Fortune 500 companies indicated that, “it is absolutely critical that if ICANN determines to grant such name extensions (. INC, .LLC, .CORP) … that it does so in a restricted manner that is intended to protect consumers and the community of interest that exists among validly registered US companies,” he further indicated that “at minimum, any approval for company ending strings be restricted in such a way that reasonably assures that the legal entity is, in fact, an active and validly registered legal entity in the United States, as DOT Registry LLC has proposed within its application.”

Jolles indicates that his, “team has worked tirelessly to develop guidelines that will be both user friendly and allow our registrars to appropriately determine if an applicant is in fact a registered US business. Over the last six months we have created strong partnerships with the leading corporate registration companies in order to have the most efficient and credible registration process possible. As a corporate affiliate of the National Organization of Secretary of States (NASS), we feel an acute sense of responsibility to uphold our company’s mission and guidelines in order to deliver a strong product and we are excited to participate in this newest evolution of the Internet.”

500 DOMAIN NAMES TO BE SOLD IN INTERNET AUCTION

Around 500 more, are currently available to the highest bidder in an Internet-only auction dedicated exclusively to registered domain names being held by Universal Live (www.universallive.com). The auction is up and bidders can participate, either directly through the firm’s website or the platforms LiveAuctioneers.com and iCollector.com.

“This is the first-ever domain name auction for us and the first-ever for iCollector.com and LiveAuctioneers.com, so we’re all anxious to see how well it does,” said Martin Shape of Universal Live. “It’s a wide open market. There are some great names to bid on, in an array of categories. Many start as low as $20.” Mr. Shape added the auction will end Saturday, March 10.

Many of the domain names in the auction pertain to the following categories: sex, clouds (the virtual kind, not the puffy kind), e-commerce, dating and relationships, photography (and especially war-related photography), technology and gaming, and (curiously enough) the Occupy Wall Street movement. Some of the lots are in multiples, featuring more than one domain name.

Domain name auctions are not new. They’ve been around for some time, and a number of factors have contributed to their swift rise in popularity. The personalization of the Internet has resulted in domain names being purchased by more private individuals and businesses than initially estimated. As a result, there’s been a hike in speculation and domain name warehousing.

Anticipating a growing need for a targeted, top-level domain name, “domainers” began to purchase names with an eye toward selling them at a later time. The advancing field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has also increased the desire to own a domain name that accurately reflects the subject matter of the site. Auctions sprang up as a way to match buyers with sellers.

Sites like Universallive.com are especially attractive because they provide state-of-the-art technology and bidding platforms, through which bidders can easily navigate. In the past, if a domain name was already registered by another party, it was generally advisable to simply pick a different name. Now, that domain name could very well be posted for sale in an online auction.

Some of the sex-related domain names in the Universal Live auction are somewhat ribald, but Mr. Shape was quick to note that some crossed the line into indecency and were bumped from the sale. Examples of available names include xxx.com.lc (est. $1,500-$2,310), sexiestsites.com (est. $60-$90); sexy.com.lc (est. $500-$770) and sexxify.com (est. $60-$90).

Some dating and relationships names include afternoonher.com and afternoonhim.com (offered as one lot with a pre-sale estimate of $200-$310); camdates.mobi (est. $700-$1,080); the clever and eye-grabbing yesyesyes.me (est. $1,500-$2,310); camdate.me (est. $700-$1,080); and canoodle.me (est. $300-$460). The more risqué site sextaholic.com is expected to fetch $60-$90.

The e-commerce domain names are many and include halfpricetld.com (est. $70-$110); freegiftdelivery.com (est. $350-$460); and buy.com.lc (est. $1,500-$2,310). Militaria and war photography sites include war.org.es (est. $1,000-$1,540); warphotoalbum.com (est. $250-$380); warmemorialphotographs.com (est. $120-$180); and worldwarprints.com (est. $200-$310).

Clouds and the Occupy Wall Street movement are current trends that “domainers” have evidently jumped on with zeal. Cloud names up for bid include investinthecloud.com (est. $500-$770); gotcloud.info (est. $70-$110); parkinthecloud.com (est. $70-$110); cloudenergy.me (est. $300-$460); sexycloud.info (est. $80-$120); and buycloudamerica.com/info (est. $800-$1,200).

The available Occupy Wall Street sites include occupywallstreetbuttons.com (est. $200-$300); occupywallstreetgallery.com (est. $300-$460); and joinoccupywallstreet.info (est. $50-$80). Technology and gaming names include gratedgames.com (est. $300-$460); dotgame.org (est. $500-$770); hotwargames.com (est. $400-$620); and games.com.lc (est. $1,000-$1,540).

Domain names geared toward photography in general include archivalblackandwhite.com (est $350-$460); publishyourphotography.com (est. $450-$690); and cameras.org.es (est. $300-$460). Some of the domain names defy category, or even explanation, such as monsterslice.com (est. $120-$180); welcomehomehead.com (est. $250-$380); and thefabme.info (est. $90-$140).

Universal Live specializes in collectibles, militaria, sports memorabilia, fine art, coins, jewelry and other items. The firm is always accepting quality consignments for future auctions. To consign a single item, a collection or an entire estate, you may call them at (847) 412-9900; or you can e-mail them at [email protected]. All e-mail inquiries are answered promptly.

Go Daddy Reports Registration of Over 50 million Domain Names

Go Daddy is celebrating its mark on Internet history … surpassing the 50 million domain name milestone over the weekend. Go Daddy is the only registrar organization in the history of the Internet to manage this many domain names.

The 50 millionth domain name is DBAkit.com, registered by Kranthi Kumar Kukkala of India.

The milestone illustrates the enduring power of the Internet, even during difficult economic times. As financial and employment challenges persist around the globe, Go Daddy’s fast-paced registrations are a clear sign the Internet is booming big time.

Experts predict by the year 2015, there will be more than two network connections for each person on earth and nearly three billion Internet users worldwide. For the last several years Go Daddy has been registering, renewing or transferring more than one domain name every second of every day.

“Sometimes you hear people say all the good domain names are gone, but they are dead wrong,” said Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons. “An almost unlimited supply of great names is available … right now. In fact, Go Daddy is registering two-and-a-half times more domains a month now, than we were five years ago. Why? Domain names are like 21st century real estate. They allow you to own your own place on the Internet.”

Domain names are mostly used for website addresses, but are also at the root of owning customized email or an online store. For consumers, shopping and researching goods and services online are increasingly important, yet many businesses are still working to establish their own websites.

“Our research shows that more than 40 percent of small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) do not have an online presence right now,” said IDC analyst Ray Boggs. “Hard to believe, but a lot of companies still haven’t stepped up to use a company website to reach prospects and customers. Of course this means firms like Go Daddy have what it takes to help SMBs, especially when offering one-stop online resources for SMBs to move from nothing to Web presence to major business generating activities.”

Go Daddy was developed to help business owners and individuals secure their online presence. And while Go Daddy put domain names into mainstream consciousness with edgy Super Bowl commercials, it has been the legendary 24/7 customer support and feature-rich cloud-based products that have kept Go Daddy in its industry-leading market position.

In addition to being the planet’s largest domain name registrar, Go Daddy is also the world’s largest provider of Web hosting and net-new SSL Certificates, which secure websites and other sensitive information. Go Daddy also operates the largest domain name aftermarket on the Internet, a place where registered domain names are auctioned, sold or purchased.

“For all the marketing we do … it’s the word-of-mouth, a customer’s personal endorsement … that works as Go Daddy’s most effective advertisement,” Parsons said.

Go Daddy’s 50 millionth registrant had no idea he was registering a milestone domain name. Kukkala’s website, www.DBAkit.com , is already online and is dedicated to providing Oracle Database administrators business advice.

“I am really happy to go with the Go Daddy and congratulate the company on its 50 millionth domain name registration,” said Kukkala. “I like Go Daddy for domain & Web hosting providers because of its customer service, reliability and user-friendly-set-up that work for any kind of computer user.”
