Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the launch of Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection, a new cloud-based offering for small and medium sized organizations who wish to deploy comprehensive security for their computer systems without the need for additional hardware or management software. Customers will now be able to protect their Windows-based laptops, desktops, and file servers from the proliferation and growing sophistication of threats with the simplicity and convenience of a cloud-based service.

Harnessing more than eighteen years of experience developing award-winning technologies for anti-virus and endpoint protection, Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection is designed to safeguard endpoint systems with a single solution managed from a Web-based console offering advanced protection from the endpoint to the gateway.

“As the hosted model for messaging security has become increasingly popular for its ease of management and deployment, organizations are similarly motivated by the reduced complexity that cloud-based services can offer while effectively protecting their endpoint systems” said Rowan Trollope, Senior Vice President, Symantec Hosted Services. “Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection leverages our SaaS expertise to deliver advanced technologies that help protect customer systems without requiring additional hardware, management software, or dedicated IT staffing”

As threats become more complex and the global workforce increasingly more mobile, analysts have predicted that businesses will demand highly effective security solutions that are easy to set up and require minimal maintenance– features especially important to small and medium sized businesses that have limited resources to stay current with evolving security requirements while managing a myriad of additional IT responsibilities.

“Customers often experience pain when increased IT resources are required to stay abreast of evolving endpoint threats” said Christian Christiansen, VP of Security Products and Services, IDC. “To reduce these difficulties, customers want turn-key, endpoint solutions that provide the latest protection levels with easy set up, zero maintenance, and automatic upgrades. Security SaaS implementations can fully provide these solutions”

Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection leverages the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, one of the largest security research networks in the world, and benefits from the network’s rapid threat identification and response. With Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection, automatic security updates occur transparently over an Internet connection keeping employee systems current whether workers are in the office or on the road.

“We can get a much more robust solution delivered through the cloud than we would be able to host for ourselves, and at a much more reasonable cost” said David Wassenar, Vice President, IT, Apprise Software. “We don’t have to put any team member’s time into it, and we don’t have to spend money to provide the hardware redundancy on our end to ensure high availability for the solution”

Key Features and Benefits of Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection

* Comprehensive Protection for Customer Systems: Advanced technologies for antivirus, antispyware, firewall and host intrusion prevention.
* Always-on Protection for Endpoints: Automated updates occur transparently over an Internet connection to keep employee systems current and consistent with client policies when employees are in the office or on the road – even when they’re not logged into their corporate VPN.
* Web-based Management Console: Administrators can access the administration portal over a supported Web-browser and corporate VPN access is not required to monitor and manage each computer. Administrators receive real-time alerts via SMS or email and can easily perform functions such as initiate a LiveUpdate to refresh system protection levels, view history on systems and change local policy settings.
* Ease of Management: Adds and manages new computers without requiring on-site management servers. Updates occur automatically and new features are introduced as they become available during the subscription period for no additional fee.
* Scalable: Flexibility provided through a hosted model allows the solution to scale to incorporate new endpoints quickly and efficiently without requiring additional hardware or management software.
* Fast to Deploy: Can be quickly deployed to users via standard download, an email invitation or silently pushed to the customer’s network.

“Getting hardware out of our data center and centrally managing all of our endpoints with a single Web interface has been a top priority for us” said Sumeet Lakhaney, IT Director for New York City-based Fourth Wall Restaurants which manages six upscale restaurants in Manhattan. “Our focus on building a next generation IT center means that we have moved to a SaaS model for all of our business applications which will standardize our environment and decrease our overall cost to serve”

Symantec Hosted Endpoint Protection is available now to customers in North America. It delivers antivirus, antispyware, firewall and host intrusion prevention for desktops and laptops and antivirus and antispyware for file servers. The service can be purchased on its own or in combination with other Symantec Hosted Services across email, web and IM.

Kaspersky Patents Code-tracing Technology

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the successful patenting of some revolutionary new technology for tracing program code.

The technology offers a method for simply and securely tracing the sequence of events that occurs when a set of program instructions are executed. The patented system allows Kaspersky Lab’s team of experts to analyze the behavior of third-party programs without having to scrutinize the software’s structure and internal processes on a line-by-line basis.

The new technology, developed by Kaspersky Lab’s expert Mikhail Pavlyushik, was registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on 30 March, 2010 as Patent Number 7689974 В1.
Code-tracing allows a program’s behavior to be examined in detail in a number of different running environments. The resultant traces are then used for identifying errors and debugging software, as well as for optimizing its performance. The data obtained during code-tracing may include information about a program’s algorithms that remain the intellectual property of the vendor. This means it has to be protected against unauthorized access. The newly-patented technology from Kaspersky Lab recognizes this requirement and complies with it in full. The traces created by the software are not recorded in the usual text format, but in binary code. Additionally, all the strings are replaced by numerical descriptors, making it impossible for unauthorized parties to read the data produced by the tracing process. However, the patented system is capable of taking the data generated by the code-tracing software and turning it into legible text that program developers and other trusted users can work with.
“Using code-tracing techniques to examine a program’s source code is an effective method of analyzing its behavior. It has been used extensively in our products and by our research departments for some time now,” said Nikolay Grebennikov, CTO for Kaspersky Lab. “This newly patented technology considerably simplifies the tracing process for our malware analysts and it ensures that the results cannot be accessed by anyone who is not suitably authorized.”
Kaspersky Lab currently has more than 50 patent applications pending in the U.S., Russia, China and Europe that relate to a range of unique IT security technologies developed by the Company’s personnel.

HostPilot Control Panel Release 1.48 Announced

HostPilot Control Panel provides business owners and IT managers with a single point of control over their Intermedia-hosted communications services. Its intuitive features enable complex Exchange administration – such as remotely wiping data from a lost BlackBerry Wireless Handheld™ – to be delegated to non-technical staff.

Release 1.48 of HostPilot Control Panel includes:

* Onboarding overview: A new migration overview page shows customers the step-by-step process Intermedia uses to rapidly migrate them from an in-house Exchange server. This provides transparency into the process and the proprietary tools Intermedia applies.

* Customer-controlled cut-over: Cut-over refers to the moment a customer switches to Intermedia’s Exchange hosting service from their prior set-up. The new functionality gives customers the option to perform cut-over directly once migration is complete, increasing their control over the Exchange migration process.

* Add-in tool for migrating Active Directory objects: This tool is being released in beta. It simplifies the migration of Active Directory objects (i.e. users, contacts and distribution lists) from an on-premise to hosted environment. Via an add-in to the Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC), the tool is installed on the administrator’s workstation so they can migrate Active Directory objects in less time and with more control.

* Customer communication system: The system enables Intermedia to send targeted, proactive messaging to customers informing them of maintenance events and other service issues. Impacted customers will receive event notifications on their HostPilot landing page, by email, and, if they wish, SMS text message. These customer communication enhancements help Intermedia customers stay in-the-know regarding service events.

“We continuously strive to find new product and delivery enhancements that give the control of an on-premise solution to our customers – without the complexity, maintenance and other expenses associated with on-premise email,” says Jonathan McCormick, COO, Intermedia.

GlobalSign Announces E-Notarization in Ireland

GMO GlobalSign Inc (www.globalsign.com), one of the longest established Certification Authorities (CA) and specialists in digital certificate security, has today announced a significant milestone for Ireland with the first successful e-Notarization being completed by David Walsh, Solicitor and Notary Public (www.davidwalshlegal.ie), and Registrar for the Faculty of Notaries Public in Ireland (www.notarypublic.ie), using GlobalSign’s Adobe® Certified Document Services (CDS) solution branded as DocumentSign.

In today’s interconnected digital world, it is important for businesses and legal professionals to ensure that any data transmitted electronically across public networks, such as the Internet, retains its authenticity and integrity whilst shown to originate from a verified source. GlobalSign’s DocumentSign Digital ID is the ideal solution, allowing the creator to add certification and approval signatures to secure Adobe® PDF documents. The document recipient can then instantly verify the trusted status of the document in their natural language, simply by opening the file with a ubiquitous product such as Adobe Reader®.

Irish businesses and private citizens alike are now able to have their critical business documents e-Notarized by David and a growing number of Irish Notaries who have recognized the need to act as hubs and upload trusted business information on to the Internet. The ability for notaries to be able to offer the Internet as a highly available and environmentally friendly transport mechanism for notarized documents will act as a catalyst for eBusiness and eProcurement in 2010 and beyond. The PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures (PAdES) format is a recognized European Digital Signature format under the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Technical Standard (TS) 102 778 (announced by ETSI in September 2009). As companies move forward to comply with the recommendations of eProcurement initiatives, such as the Pan European Public Procurement Online (PEPPOL) project’s Virtual Company Dossier (VCD), notaries are also ideally placed to take advantage of the time lag between country-specific company registrars being able to offer the option of providing digitally signed company formation evidence. CDS compliant digital certificates enable an e-Notary to create an authentic digital copy of any formal evidence of a company formation.

The document e-Notarized by David was referred to the Department of Foreign Affairs for technical scrutiny and considered to be authentic. It may yet be the first Irish e-Notarial certificate to receive the e-Apostille in Ireland in due course, Ireland being well advanced in its e-Apostille pilot programme.

“These are very exciting times indeed for any Notary Public, as we now have a tool set which allows us to take advantage of the Internet, and as such provide a more efficient service to our customers, whilst at the same time retaining the security and trust which are the hallmarks of the Notarial profession.” commented David Walsh, Solicitor & Notary Public david (at) davidwalshlegal (dot) ie, and Registrar for the Faculty of Notaries Public in Ireland info (at) notarypublic (dot) ie.

“This first e-notarization in Ireland represents a significant step towards moving away from a traditionally paper-based industry, thus reducing carbon footprint and increasing time and cost efficiencies at all levels”, said Steve Roylance, Business Development Director, GMO GlobalSign. “We look forward to continuing to provide the highest levels of security and trust to an industry where compliancy is key.”

About Adobe® CDS Certificates Certified Document Services (CDS) is the first digital signing solution that allows authors to create Adobe® PDF files that automatically certify to the recipient that the author’s identity has been verified by a trusted organization. Authors of PDFs add digital Certifying Signatures and Approval Signatures to documents they distribute over the Internet. The process is the virtual equivalent to sealing a document and adding wet-ink signatures and assuring the recipient that the document is authentic, comes from a verified source and the contents have not been tampered with since being published.

About GMO GlobalSign Established in 1996 and as a WebTrust accredited public certificate authority, GlobalSign offers publicly trusted SSL, including EV SSL Certificates, S/MIME and Code Signing Certificates for use on all platforms including mobile devices. Its Trusted Root solution uses the widely distributed GlobalSign Root CA certificates to provide immediate PKI trust for Microsoft CA and enterprise CAs, eliminating the costs associated with using untrusted Root Certificates. Its partnership with Adobe® to provide Certified Document Services (CDS) enables secure digitally signed PDF e-documents. These core Digital Certificate solutions allow its thousands of customers to conduct secure online transactions and data transfer, distribute tamper-proof code, and bind identities to client certificates for email security and remote two factor authentication. The company has a history of innovation within the online security market and has offices in the US, UK, Belgium, Japan, and China.

Possible DNSSEC Problems on May 5

internet users may have connection problems on May 5, at 17:00 UTC, when DNSSEC will be rolled out across all 13 web root servers.

Bruce Tonkin, chief strategy officer at Melbourne IT, says:

“The problem may take several days to surface and be inconsistent from one user’s PC to the next. A user at one machine that hasn’t switched on his PC for two or three days will have no access to the internet. A user that left his machine on the night before will have some pages – and responses from DNS servers – cached on their machine, and will still have connectivity.”

Tonkin recommended network managers run a series of simple online tests to ensure their network can handle the larger DNS responses:

A reply-size test available at DNS-OARC:
