Dot .ME Domain Names Auction

Moniker® and SnapNames®, both Oversee.net companies, will host an online auction from May 4-11, placing some of the best call-to-action .ME domains up for bid.

“Our personal names auction earlier this month allowed people around the world to snatch up their first or last name attached to a dot-ME domain,” stated Predrag Lesic, Executive Director of the .ME Registry. “On the heels of that auction, we are now working with Moniker to provide global bidders with some of the most clever call-to-action dot-ME domains available.”

Moniker was the first auctioneer of premium .ME domain names and holds the record for top sales, including Date.Me, which sold at $70,000, and Ask.Me at $20,000. This online auction will be incorporated exclusively into the company’s popular Showcase Auction series via the SnapNames.com platform.

The auction begins May 4 at Noon ET and ends May 11 at 3:15 p.m. ET. Bidding information can be found at: http://showcase.snapnames.com/upcoming-auctions. Some of the .ME domains up for auction include:

Transfer of DotSpeedy Domains to Secura GmbH

ICANN has authorized a bulk transfer of DotSpeedy LLC’s gTLD domain names to Secura GmbH, due to a compliance action taken by ICANN that resulted in the de-accreditation of registrar DotSpeedy LLC (dba dotspeedy.com).

The affected gTLD registries have taken steps to effect the bulk transfers. Former registrant-customers of DotSpeedy should soon receive notices of the transfer from Secura. Customer questions about the transfer should be directed to Secura, using the contact details provided below. Additional information about this bulk transfer of DotSpeedy’s domain names is also provided below.

FAQs
Q. Why was this transfer authorized by ICANN?
A. DotSpeedy’s Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) was terminated by ICANN because of DotSpeedy’s failure to comply with the requirements of the RAA. (The notice of termination is posted athttp://www.icann.org/correspondence/burnette-to-alexandrine-12mar10-en.pdf[PDF, 64 KB]). As a result, DotSpeedy is no longer permitted to register or manage gTLD registrations.
Q. How was the gaining registrar selected?
A. I CANN followed its De-Accredited Registrar Transition Procedure (seehttp://www.icann.org/en/processes/registrars/de-accredited-registrar-transition-procedure-01oct08.pdf[PDF, 119 KB]) to identify a gaining registrar. Through this competitive process, Secura was selected.
Q. Will Secura attempt to contact the affected registrants? What should current/former DotSpeedy customers do?
A. Former customers of DotSpeedy should receive a notice of the transfer and instructions for continued management of their names from Secura. Affected customers who do not receive notices from Secura should contact Secura directly at:

Q. Do registrants have to pay a fee for the bulk transfer?
A. No, there is no cost to registrants for the bulk transfer. Unlike a normal inter-registrar transfer, the registration terms will not be extended by a year. Accordingly, it is important to contact Secura if your registration will expire soon in order to maintain your registration.
Q. Why do former DotSpeedy customers need to contact Secura?
A. DotSpeedy did not forward billing information to Secura. Accordingly, all registrants must provide updated billing information or transfer their names to other registrars.
Q. What if former DotSpeedy customers want to use a different registrar?
A. Registrants will continue to be able to transfer their registrations to other registrars under the Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy (seehttp://www.icann.org/en/transfers/). Note that Secura may deny transfers for the first 60 days following the bulk transfer, at its discretion. This 60-day period is permissible under the Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy, and is intended to help protect registrants. Flying.com Domain Name Sold for $1.1 Million

UsedAirplanes, Inc., the parent company of UsedAirplanes.com, announced today that they have completed the purchase of the domain name Flying.com for $1.1 million.

The first (beta) version of Flying.com will be launched on June 1, 2010 to display all of the used airplanes and aircraft from the company’s flagship website UsedAirplanes.com. This will provide a new and additional sales channel for the brokers that currently list their inventory on UsedAirplanes.com.

“The amount of traffic Flying.com will generate will obviously enhance the amount of leads our brokers will receive for their used airplanes and aircraft. The brokers put their faith and trust in us when we asked for it and it gives me great pleasure to offer them this additional sales channel,” stated Horne.

The company will spend the remainder of 2010 developing Flying.com into a digital media, aviation-community based website with a strong focus on social media. In addition, Flying.com will be the first website developed from the ground up with Apple’s new iPad format in mind throughout the development.

“With the overwhelming success of the Apple iPad launch over the past few days it is obvious that Steve Jobs has, once again, developed a revolutionary product that makes the users experience far greater through a more enjoyable and user-friendly format. After holding the iPad, seeing the potential for myself, and watching the expressions on the faces of others that had the opportunity to use one, it is clear that one day the device will be on the coffee table of almost every aviators home and in the lobby of every FBO in the world. The iPad (www.Apple.com) is really that remarkable,” stated Horne.

When people hear about a product or service they turn to the Internet for real-time reviews, pictures, videos, blogs, buyer and industry ratings and comments and suggestions within the social media avenues. It all comes down to where readers are and where they are going.

“Readers clearly wanted a new way to enhance how they enjoy, share and gather information, send and receive emails and view new media (digital). We are proud to be able to embrace the future and build Flying.com with the iPad in mind while focusing entirely on digital (new) media.

Brokers can sign up to list their inventory on both Flying.com & UsedAirplanes.com by contacting Laura Thompson at 800-533-9390 (ext. 1) or email: Laura(at)Flying(dot)com . A video of Ms. Thompson is available at the website: (http://www.usedairplanes.com/about-us.html).

Iron Mountain Adds New Service for Internet Domain Name Registrars

Iron Mountain Digital, the technology arm of information management services company Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), today announced the availability of the ICANN Deposit Audit Service (IDAS) application for the systematic analysis of Internet registrar escrow deposits. This new service further reduces risks for consumers and businesses that have registered domain names with ICANN-accredited registrars. ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization that oversees the allocation and administration of generic top-level domain names (such as those ending in .com, .net, .org, etc.). ICANN also governs which organizations can become domain name registrars for generic top-level domains. Registrars are the entities that sell, register, and renew domain names for Internet users.

With the ICANN Deposit Audit Service application, Iron Mountain systematically audits registrar escrow deposits, measures the integrity of those deposits, and reports the results to ICANN. The new application supplements Iron Mountain’s Registrar Data Escrow service. With this service, domain name registrars periodically escrow their registration information records to safeguard these intellectual property assets. Because the registration data is placed in an escrow account with Iron Mountain and verified through the IDAS application, it can be effectively retrieved by ICANN in the event of a technical, operational, or business failure of a registrar.

“The goal of the data escrow program is to help ensure the security and stability of the Domain Name System by protecting the data associated with registered domain names in a secure escrow account,” said Mike Zupke, ICANN’s registrar liaison manager. “Iron Mountain’s Deposit Audit Service is the next step in a full range of programs and procedures that will work to safeguard registrants and maintain Internet stability.”

“By escrowing and verifying the integrity of domain name registration information records, Iron Mountain is helping to protect consumers and businesses that have registered domain names with ICANN-accredited registrars,” explained John Boruvka, vice president of intellectual property management at Iron Mountain Digital. “As a result, they can retrieve their registration information data, even if the registrar goes out of business.”

In 2007, Iron Mountain was selected by ICANN to provide escrow services through its Registrar Data Escrow service, which is available to the more than 900 ICANN-accredited domain name registrars and protects registration data for the more than 110 million domain names they support. In 2008, Iron Mountain implemented automated processing for Registrar Data Escrow deposits.

Now, in addition to escrowing registration information records, registrar deposits will be periodically audited by the escrow agent to verify that escrowed data matches publicly available registration information records. Iron Mountain’s ICANN Deposit Audit Service was developed to meet this need.

Alentus Corporation Launches New Domain Registrar

Alentus Corporation, a web hosting, domain registrar, dedicated server, colocation, and E-Commerce hosting provider, today announced the completion of its Domain Name Registrar status. This extensive process involved the review and approval by the governing domain registration body ICANN, Verisign and other smaller domain registry authorities. Since 2008, Alentus has been deeply involved in the coveted status working diligently not only on the actual approval but a custom registration software platform as well.

Alentus is now in a position to directly sell and manage the highest volume domain names such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name and .pro through its www.lowpricedomains.com brand as well as through the www.alentus.com and www.Websitesource.com brands. This provides coverage for the vast majority of all domain names and more domain extensions are in progress. “In the past we had worked as a reseller on behalf of other registrars such as Go Daddy, now we can realize the cost benefits of not using a middleman,” said William King, CEO. “We look forward to maximizing the benefit of our registrar status by exponentially growing our existing client base of over 20,000 domain names as well as creating a whole new marketing vehicle geared towards shared and dedicated hosting customers. We are now truly a one stop shop for small to medium sized businesses. It is also a priority to set up our own reseller network while appealing to a broader spectrum of potential customers as currently done by other leading brands. For customers, we can now offer a more seamless sign-up and billing process. For shareholders, this is yet another product set we can utilize for significant additional revenue streams and profit.”

Worldwide, the overall domain registrar business currently encompasses over 100 million domain names and top registrars and their resellers manage over five million names each and growing. That’s well over a one billion dollar a year business segment just in basic domain name registration. A few months ago, ICANN also began allowing foreign character sets for domain names and that is expected to provide another growth area for the registrar business. Ancillary sales opportunities include digital certificates, domain name parking revenue, web hosting and more.

25 Years of Dot Com

VeriSign, Inc., the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure for the networked world, has hosted a summit of Internet policymakers, industry leaders and other stakeholders in Washington, D.C., to kick off a celebration of the economic, social and cultural impact of .com. The popular domain marked its 25th anniversary on March 15.

On March 15, 1985, symbolics.com was the first .com registered in what had yet to be labeled the “world wide web.” While it took nearly a decade for the domain — and the consumer Internet — to take off, today there are over 80 million .com websites and the domain is a prominent feature of one of our culture’s most iconic developments.

While its economic and social impact is undisputed, for the first time the economic impact of .com has been quantified in a new study that found that the domain serves as a platform for $400 billion in annual economic activity. The report, by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), found that the broader Internet economy drives more than $1.5 trillion in global annual economic activity, more than the global sales of medicine, investment in renewable energy, and government investment in R&D, combined. The ITIF estimates that the economic activity flowing across the .com infrastructure is likely to grow to $950 billion in annual revenue by 2020.

The .com domain has defined a generation of innovation and entrepreneurism, serving as the launch pad for a new generation of companies that have transformed communications, commerce, entertainment and more.

It has also become part of the fabric of daily life. According to a recent poll of over 3,800 respondents by an independent research firm, 81 percent of Americans visit five or more .com websites a day, with many visiting more than that. Two-thirds of Americans visit between five and 25 .com websites a day. And, nearly two-thirds of Americans have used a .com website to reconnect with an old friend, with six percent reporting that they met their spouse or significant other on a .com website. Over half of respondents reported finding important medical information on a .com website and one in five said they found a job on a .com site.

The .com domain remains at the center of nearly every major Internet trend. According to VeriSign’s Internet Profiling Service there are 11.9 million e-commerce and online business websites, 1.8 million sports-related sites and 4.3 million entertainment-related sites with a .com web address. The most popular words among .com URL’s today include “home” (1.2 million), “online” (1 million) and “land” (891,000).

“For anyone under the age of 30, they probably don’t remember when the Internet wasn’t in their life. It’s become such an essential part of how we work, live and play. The 25th anniversary of .com gives us a moment to step back and realize how deeply the Internet revolution has transformed our society,” said Mark McLaughlin, CEO and president of VeriSign. “At VeriSign, we’re proud of the role we play in helping bring the Internet to people, but we never take for granted that we have to continue to build and strengthen the Internet so it can continue to meet the increasing demands placed upon it.”

In looking ahead to the next chapter in the history of .com and its integral role in the Internet, and as part of its commitment to the Internet infrastructure, VeriSign has embarked on a new initiative called Project Apollo. This initiative will dramatically strengthen and scale the .com infrastructure by the year 2020. Over the next three years alone, the Internet will see the number of users increase by 500 million to 2.2 billion worldwide, and devices accessing the Internet increase from 1.6 billion devices to 2.7 billion devices. And with the emergence of innovations like smart grids, electronic health care and radio frequency ID (RFID) tags, the Internet and associated technology systems will undergo profound changes in the next decade.

To meet the infrastructure challenges expected by 2020, VeriSign is scaling and in some cases revamping the infrastructure that keeps .com running. VeriSign’s 2020 technology roadmap calls for it to grow capacity 1,000 times today’s level of 4 trillion queries to manage 4 quadrillion queries per day to support normal and peak attack volumes based on what the company has experienced as well as Internet attack trends.

“Over the last 15 years, there have been numerous predictions of the Internet’s imminent collapse. But the Internet infrastructure has withstood not only a dramatic increase in both users and usage, but malicious attacks because of the investment and efforts to continually scale it,” said Ken Silva, VeriSign CTO. “With the technology roadmap outlined in Project Apollo, we are building the infrastructure essential to manage the Internet’s next wave of growth as increasing demands put stress on the system and drive a dramatic increase in traffic.”

.ORG The Public Interest Registry to Deploy Enhanced Domain Security

.ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR) today announced plans to complete the final step to realizing full DNSSEC deployment in the .ORG registry by accepting second level signed .ORG zones beginning in June of 2010. This positions .ORG as the first generic top-level domain (TLD) to offer full DNSSEC deployment.

All registrars can now plan to offer an additional security service to their customers. The benefits of DNSSEC include the ability to thwart the increasing predominance of attacks like pharming, cache poisoning, and DNS redirection that have been used to commit fraud, distribute malware, and/or identity theft. DNSSEC, an upgrade to the internet infrastructure, protects Internet resolvers (clients) from forged DNS data, such as that created by DNS cache poisoning.

“This announcement, coupled with recent ones by Comcast, various ccTLDs and even ICANN, is an important signal not only for application providers, ISPs, and telcos, but also for registrars to begin planning their implementation and addressing the customers’ need for enhanced security,” said Alexa Raad, chief executive officer of PIR. “Ensuring Internet security and stability are among our highest priorities. Being the first to fully deploy DNSSEC positions .ORG registrants will be amongst the first to safeguard their users from escalating security threats, especially as Internet usage continues to grow exponentially.”

Launching signed delegations, with the technical support of Afilias, is the final step in PIR’s phased approach to fully deploying DNSSEC within the .ORG zone. A rigorous “friends and family” testing phase, started in June of 2008, has enabled PIR not only to thoroughly test and address operational and deployment issues related to zone management, key distribution and rollover, but also to assist registrars in the development and deployment of the service.

“We applaud PIR’s leadership in the deployment of DNSSEC in the gTLD space,” said Rod Beckstrom, president and chief executive officer of ICANN. “Opening up general registration of signed zones in .ORG is a major step forward.”

All interested registrars must pass a mandatory DNSSEC Certification Test. For more information regarding .ORG DNSSEC initiatives and information, please visit: www.pir.org/dnssec.

About .ORG, The Public Interest Registry

Trusted across all ages, backgrounds and nationalities, .ORG is where people turn to find credible information, get involved, fund causes and support advocacy. .ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR) empowers the global community to use the Internet more effectively and, concurrently, takes a leadership position among Internet stakeholders on policy and related issues. The .ORG domain is the Internet’s third largest “generic” or non-country specific top-level domain with more than 8 million domain names registered worldwide. PIR is based in Reston, Virginia, USA.

Gossimer Offers Indian Domain Extensions

Gossimer, the world’s fastest growing domain name registration and web hosting company has announced a sale on Indian ccTLDs (Country code Top Level Domains). The Indian ccTDL extensions included in the sale are .IN, .CO.IN, NET.IN, ORG.IN, GEN.IN, FIRM.IN, IND.IN, etc. These domains are available for USD 5.31 per year.

Gossimer has also lowered the price of some other domains including .BIZ, .INFO, .MOBI, .TV, .ME, .CO.NZ, .NET.NZ, And .ORG.NZ. The company’s spokesperson has asserted that its pricing, at this point of time, is very competitive. Gossimer has carefully calculated its move and planned out a strategy to lower the entry barrier to bring onboard webmasters from India. This price-drop is being seen by the industry as a significant move towards pulling India-based as well India-focused webmasters and online entrepreneurs.

“We are seeing India as a huge market,” Said Marvin Dreyer, CEO of Gossimer. He further added, “Unlike any other non-English market, reaching India is comparatively easy, as English is sort-of official language for educated class there. It is also a business language in this country. We should also keep in mind that India has a huge population base of English-speaking net-surfing people who have dreams and abilities to make it big on the Internet. By offering low prices on Indian domain extensions, we are lowering the entry barrier.”

Each domain purchased under this promotion will be entitled to avail all the freebies that come with domain names sold by Gossimer. The company offers many freebies like DNS service, Domain Forwarding, Mail Forwarding, Privacy Protection, Domain Theft Protection, Easy-to-use Control Panel, and Bulk tools, which help you manage (register, renew, and transfer, etc.) your domain name portfolio without much hassle.

In the recent times, Gossimer has been very much aggressive with its promotion plan. The company has recently shifted its base to Melbourne (Florida) from New Jersey, which has extended its functionality and made operation more efficient and scalable. Another important change has been the significant boost in its datacenters. The company has pioneered the concept of globally distributed datacenter with supererogatory server infrastructure. This becomes particularly useful when it comes to reaching customers beyond the boundary of the United States.

RRPproxy portal integrates additional features for domain resellers

With a new structure, a revised design and extended features the internationally operating domain registrar Key-Systems has optimized the usability of its reseller portal RRPproxy.net. Along with the relaunch, new features for a higher ease of use and faster processes were integrated in the RRPproxy web client. The former web interface will be simultaneously online until April 2010.

Zweibrücken, 10-02-16. From now on resellers can choose between the English version and a new, German version for the web interface. A Spanish version will soon be available. The new web interface guarantees the highest ease of use through the application of modern web technology with Javascript. Full functionality is is still possible without javascript. The web client, which is compatible with all popular web browsers, saves time by reducing the clicks and movements required to perform a task. Many parameters are now presented as explicit terms in drop-down menus and can thus be found directly. For example, clients no longer have to search the relevant code for special country-code requirements of a TLD (top-level domain) and enter it manually. The possibilities of classifying and searching are considerably extended. For example, users can rapidly access the domains of different zones.

Processes like the domain search have been logically extended and improved: After entering a vacant domain name, the web client immediately relays to the registration. If the domain is already registered in the own account, one receives a domain status report. In case of a foreign registration the system allows to initiate a transfer if the user has the relevant legitimation. Once executed, entries are now automatically offered again when completing the contact form for domain registration. Bulk commands are possible with as many parameters as required. So the customer can at the same time apply different adjustments on a multitude of domains (e.g. for the administrative contact). With IDNs (International Domain Names) resellers can work directly within the domain management, a previous translation into punycode is no longer needed.

Web interface with plausible structure

The RRPproxy web client is designed in a new, modern layout and allows users the intuitive understanding of its functions. On the landing page all the superior processes are clearly presented. A status display directly in the upper area shows balance and credit. Through the placement of the API control (Application Programming Interface) on the left, vertical menu as well as the account management and special tools in the horizontal navigation bar the work flow is clearly structured. The functions domain registration, transfer and renewal belong to the left handed API control. Furthermore, the management of DNS, hosting, SSL certificates (Secure Sockets Layer) and subresellers is located there. The management of contact data and the direct API access form the ending of this menu. The horizontal account management tab includes the links for account, tools, finances, downloads and support. Here users can among other things change their access data, convert IDNs, manage accounting, download forms and documentations or directly message their questions to the support team. Special tools are for example the direct socket access and the dispatch of bulk commands.

Meta-registry for resellers worldwide

RRPproxy is the worldwide reseller network of the Key-Systems GmbH. The fully automated real-time system for domain registration and management includes extensive additional offers like DNS, SSL certificates, SMS gateway, a subreseller system and the API hosting solution HOMER (Hosting Management Environment Repository). RRPproxy offers more than 200 different internet endings for domain registration and management in one easy to handle platform. Resellers can address all the linked registries via RRPproxy which is why it can also be called the “meta registry”.
